Overview
Shanika A. Owens is an Associate based in Butzel’s Detroit office. Shanika focuses her practice on business, corporate, and real estate law. Shanika is a graduate of Wayne State University Law School (J.D., cum laude) and Michigan State University (B.S. Economics).
Prior to law school, Shanika served as a legislative assistant to several members of the Detroit City Council where she advised policymakers on several issues including economic development and matters leading up to the Detroit bankruptcy.
Shanika was awarded the Damon J. Keith Scholarship, a full tuition allowance, to attend Wayne Law. While in law school, Shanika served as President of the Black Law Students Association and she was one of few students appointed to the Dean’s Diversity Task Force. Shanika was elected to the Wayne Law Student Bar Association Board of Governors. She was also a student attorney in the Transnational Environmental Law Clinic, and she served on the Executive Board of the Journal of Law in Society.
Shanika interned for Butzel as a summer associate for two years. In addition, she interned with Hon. Avern Cohn of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan.
Shanika serves on the board of the West Village Association in Detroit.
