Summer Associate Program

Advice To Law Students

Today’s lawyer is multifaceted and must be equipped with more than sound practice skills. A successful lawyer must also be business savvy and possess the ability to lead. As you search for a law firm, it is important that you find a place where the emphasis on lawyer development matches your career aspirations. While classroom instruction has its place, Butzel Long programs emphasize interactive, experience-based learning. Our programs focus not only on substantive legal skills, but also on business and leadership development.

Coaching

Our research shows that effective learning occurs when working in small groups or one-on-one with experienced lawyers. Developed through our partnership with Wayne State University, our Coaching Program provides associates with customized, experience based training in the critical business, leadership and practice skills that are essential to a lawyer’s practice.

Mentoring

Shareholders and experienced associates mentor new associates while they become acclimated to the Firm. Also developed through our partnership with Wayne State University, our Mentoring Program is a structured process that includes providing associates with advice and guidance as they navigate their first year with the Firm.

Practice Skills

The ability to consistently provide outstanding legal services to their clients is the foundation of a successful lawyer. We know what it takes for you to be successful and we tailor our programs to meet your individual development needs.

Learn To Lead

Through our partnership with Wayne State University, the Firm’s Leadership Development Program provides training targeted to each stage of a lawyer’s career. Topics include efficient utilization of support staff and paralegals, effective mentoring of new associates and developing collaborative relationships within the firm.

Litigation Training

For the past several years, the Firm has focused efforts on its Litigation Associate Training Program. The program combines traditional classroom training with a hands-on approach to practice advocacy skills including mock depositions, witness interviews and cross-examination techniques.

Summer Program

Our Summer Associates are our assurance that Butzel Long will continue its over 160-year history as an outstanding law firm.
