Maya Smith is an Associate in Butzel’s Detroit office. Ms. Smith concentrates her practice in the areas of intellectual property and emerging technology, including data protection and cybersecurity.

Overview

She assists clients on compliance and enforcement matters, managing cyber risk, breach investigations and response, and emerging technologies. Ms. Smith also assists on copyright filing, technology licensing and intellectual property litigation as well as trademark prosecution.

Maya's trademark practices encompasses all aspects of U.S. and international trademark law including global trademark portfolio and brand management; clearance searches and opinions, filing and prosecuting domestic and foreign trademark applications, development of domain name strategies and resolution of domain name disputes, developing trademark monitoring and enforcement strategies, drafting license, co-branding, coexistence and settlement agreements. On the social media side, she has experience with trademark and copyright infringement disputes. In addition, she has experience with Trademark Trial and Appeal Board proceedings and federal and state litigation matters involving trademark and copyright disputes.

Ms. Smith graduated from the Western Michigan University Cooley Law School where she was an active member of the Black Law Student Association and the Sports and Entertainment Law Society. She served on WMU’s Law Review. Ms. Smith received her Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Spelman College. Prior to law school, she worked as a Legislative Aide for the Georgia State Representative of the 62nd District. During her undergrad, she volunteered with Advocacy for Action, working as a case manager and served as the Georgia Executive Director for Operations for the Grl-Pwr Foundation.
