Overview

Known for being highly driven and for the tenacious level of counsel he provides to his clients, Garett most enjoys the challenging nature inherent in representing clients in matters involving the administrative state and governmental regulation of private industry. He represents individuals and entities adverse to state administrative departments and relishes having the opportunity to assist clients facing bureaucratic, regulatory, and administrative obstacles. In some instances, a lawsuit to address improper governmental action or regulation can involve bringing suit to protect an individual’s constitutional rights. Garett developed experience in this area of the law while working for the Michigan Department of Attorney General. His time spent in that role provides him with a unique perspective when suing a government agency on behalf of a business or individual. Garett also represents clients whose constitutional rights have been violated by the state and/or federal government as it relates to professional or industrial licensing, property, business, and employment issues.

When it comes to counseling political candidates on election law and campaign matters, Garett’s experience includes representation of candidates at the State Board of Canvassers, Bureau of Elections, Michigan Court of Appeals, and Michigan Supreme Court. Garett also represents clients in high-profile criminal cases where the subject matter is politically motivated. He represents candidates for the state legislature, the United States Congress, and statewide candidates for state and federal offices.

Garett is a Shareholder located in the firm's Lansing office. His litigation experience includes service as an assistant attorney general for the state of Michigan and as a chief assistant prosecutor for Clinton County, Michigan. Prior to his legal career, he proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps (2002 to 2007). Garett is a graduate of The Military College of South Carolina (“The Citadel”) and Michigan State University College of Law.
