Butzel Long attorney Michael J. Lavoie to receive award from the Oakland County Bar Association on October 21

Attorney to receive the Leon Hubbard Community Service Award

DETROIT, Mich. – Butzel Long attorney and shareholder Michael J. Lavoie will be honored by the Oakland County Bar Association during its Diversity in the Legal Profession Dinner on October 21, 2010 at The Townsend Hotel in Birmingham.

Mr. Lavoie will receive the Leon Hubbard Community Service Award. He is the secretary of the Pontiac Alumni Foundation and the facilitator and leader of its youth mentoring initiative, the Gettysburg Group. Mr. Lavoie also is a former Peace Corps volunteer engaged in various Africa development projects.

The Leon Hubbard Award recognizes an individual who has a record of community service, has promoted cultural diversity, advanced social equality and worked to enhance the quality of life for all people in Oakland County.

Another highlight of the event will be keynote speaker Barbara L. McQuade, U.S. Attorney, Eastern District of Michigan. Before joining the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Ms. McQuade practiced law at Butzel Long.

Michael J. Lavoie

Mr. Lavoie has been practicing in the Detroit office since 1986. He is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame (B.A., cum laude, 1975) and the University of Detroit (J.D., cum laude, 1980). Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Lavoie was Assistant Chief of the Criminal Division of the U.S. Attorney’s office.

Mr. Lavoie is a member of the business litigation practice group at Butzel Long where he practices in the areas of commercial, construction and products liability litigation, as well as internal investigations and criminal white collar defense.

Mr. Lavoie presently serves as President of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan Historical Society.
