Matthew S. Derby focuses his practice on Employment Law, Traditional Labor Law, and municipal representation in Governmental Law. Private and public sector employers in a variety of industries have sought his counsel and representation for over 30 years in the areas of Labor, Employment, Corporate, and Commercial Law. He provides clients with counseling, representation, and practical solutions to navigating, drafting, and negotiating collective bargaining, employment, and severance agreements. His experience includes drafting, counseling, and negotiation of individual employment contracts, employment policies, and work rules.

Overview

Matt Derby counsels and represents private and public employers across Michigan and beyond concerning myriad employment issues. His experience includes matters involving disability discrimination and accommodation, and race, gender, and age discrimination. Mr. Derby also handles matters involving hiring, reductions-in-force, promotions, demotions, employment severance agreements, and progressive discipline and discharge. His experience further includes family medical leave compliance, investigation of employee misconduct, drug and alcohol use, ERISA withdrawal liability, and the closure and sale of unionized businesses. Additional areas of concentration include executive and incentive compensation, human resources counseling and administration.

Mr. Derby is a Shareholder located in firm’s Southwest Michigan office. Before joining Butzel, he practiced at a large law firm in Southwest Michigan. Matt routinely shares his knowledge surrounding Labor and Employment Law as a presenter for various employer groups and employment seminars. He received his juris doctor from Wayne State University Law School and his Bachelor of Arts, with distinction, from the University of Michigan. He is admitted to practice in numerous courts throughout Michigan.  In addition to numerous professional organizations pertinent to his practice, including the Michigan Municipal League and Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), Matt is also involved in several community organizations. He currently serves on the Board of Directors Governmental Affairs Committee of the Southwest Michigan Regional Chamber of Commerce.
