Overview
Since 2020, Kaoru has been an in-house counsel at one of the largest energy utilities in Japan. She provides counsel for the company’s M&A transactions, establishes joint ventures, including the negotiation of key agreements, and provides legal support in multiple renewable energy projects.
Prior to her in-house role, Kaoru was an associate at a boutique business firm in Tokyo where her work included a broad range of legal matters, including cross-border transactions and other international work. Her experience includes representing major media companies and an international media agency in high-profile defamation cases, foreign institutional investors in security fraud litigation, and a variety of other business matters. She also contributed to an international family mediation project focused on international child abduction cases and published a project report titled, “Research on Mediation Scheme for International Family Cases (especially international child abduction cases).”
Kaoru is a Law Clerk in Butzel’s Ann Arbor office. She received a Master of Laws from the University of Michigan Law School, a juris doctor from Hitotsubashi University School of Law, and a Bachelor of Laws and Faculty of Law from Hitotsubashi University School of Law. She was admitted to the Japan Federal Bar Association in 2010.
In her spare time, Kaoru enjoys traveling and running.
