LANSING, Mich. – Butzel Long has expanded its Intellectual Property (IP) Practice Group with the addition of three attorneys and staff from the intellectual property firm of Ian C. McLeod P.C. The attorneys include Ian McLeod, Counsel Mikhail Murshak, Associate and, Steven Parks, Associate.

For more than 30 years, Ian C. McLeod, P.C. has been Lansing's premiere Intellectual Property law firm. They are the leading IP provider to Michigan State University, and have been intimately involved in the commercialization of the University's technology, research and inventions. The firm also is counsel to Oakland University and Wayne State University for IP and IP and technology commercialization matters. Its client base in this area enhances Butzel Long's existing higher education technology transfer practice.

Profile of the Attorneys:

Ian McLeod, Counsel – His practice focuses on all aspects of Intellectual Property including patent and trademark preparation and prosecution in various technological areas, copyright preparation, licensing, and opinions. He has obtained for clients numerous United States and foreign patents and trademark registrations. Mr. McLeod received his B.S. in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering from the University of Michigan and his L.L.B. from the University of Michigan School of Law. He has represented various clients including Universities, spin-off companies, start-ups, large corporations and individual inventors. Mr. McLeod has prepared and prosecuted patents in various technological fields including Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology, Medical Devices, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Software Design, Electrical Engineering, Polymer Chemistry, Assays and others.

Mikail Murshak, Associate – His practice focuses on all aspects of patent preparation and prosecution in various technological areas including mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, electrical engineering, systems architecture, medical devices, microwave technology and computer technology. Mr. Murshak received his B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Michigan State University in 2000 and his J.D. from the University of Connecticut School of Law in 2003 where he attended as an Oliver Elseworth Scholar and earned the Alvin Pudlin Memorial Award for Outstanding Achievement in the preservation of First Amendment Rights. Before joining Ian C. McLeod P.C. Mr. Murshak practiced patent preparation and prosecution in Stamford, CT for a large eastern based general practice law firm. Prior to that, he managed the intellectual property portfolio for an innovation group of United Technologies Corporation (UTC).

Steven Parks, Associate – His practice focuses on all aspects of patent preparation and prosecution as well as freedom-to-operate, patentability, non-infringement, and validity opinions. His technological background is varied, including areas such as mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, and chemistry, with a particular focus in areas such as polymer chemistry, chemical process engineering, and semiconductor manufacturing methods. Dr. Parks received a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Michigan State University in 1991 with high honors, and later received a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Michigan State University in 1997. During graduate school, Dr. Parks also studied fluid mechanics at the University of Erlangen, in Germany. He received his J.D. from Michigan Law School, graduating magna cum laude in 2005. Before joining Ian C. McLeod P.C., Dr. Parks practiced patent preparation and prosecution at a large Chicago-based patent law firm. Prior to law school, he served as a post-doctoral research associate, served as an instructor for university undergraduates in chemical engineering, and worked as an analytical chemist in an environmental laboratory.
