Butzel Long attorney featured during MACPA programs in May

5.1.2013

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Butzel Long attorney and shareholder Claudia Rast will be a featured speaker during the Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants (MACPA) Members Advisory Symposium on May 7, 2013 and at the MACPA CPE Mega Conference on May 16, 2013. Ms. Rast’s presentation for both events is titled, “Defending Against Cyber Risks: Understanding Vulnerabilities and Implementing Best Practices.”

“The pace of cybercrime is accelerating,” said Ms. Rast.  “Every day companies place themselves at great economic risk by assuming that their hardware, software and internal policies/practices are up-to-date and effective against competitors, criminals, rogue nations and others bent on data theft. Worse yet, these same companies rarely ask the necessary and tough questions of their business partners about good security practices. Incorporating the right tools and practices to keep your company secure is a business imperative.”

Based in Butzel Long’s Ann Arbor office, Ms. Rast has extensive experience counseling clients both large and small on issues related to business and technology, particularly online and web-based companies. She blends the study of law, business, and technology to assist companies in their choice and use of technology.

As a Board Member and counsel to the Clean Energy Coalition (CEC), Ms. Rast developed the legal framework for the DOE’s $15M grant to the CEC for the Michigan Green Fleets project and the Michigan Public Service Commission’s $4.5M grant for the Cities of Promise program. She also serves on the Boards of the Michigan League of Conservation Voters and Ann Arbor’s New Enterprise Forum, where she coaches technology start-ups in their efforts to connect with management expertise, venture capital, and business partners.

She was recently appointed to the American Bar Association’s (ABA) President’s Legal Task Force on Cybersecurity. Ms. Rast is a frequent speaker on matters ranging from Electronic Discovery, Online Advertising, Privacy, Identity Theft, Social Media in the Workplace and IT Forensics to Responding to Data Security Breaches.
