Butzel Long attorney Daniel B. Tukel elected Fellow of The College of Labor and Employment Lawyers

DETROIT, Mich. – Butzel Long attorney and shareholder Daniel B. Tukel has been elected a Fellow of The College of Labor and Employment Lawyers.

Election as a Fellow is the highest recognition by one’s colleagues of sustained outstanding performance in the profession, exemplifying integrity, dedication and excellence. Membership is by nomination only, and is limited to those who have distinguished themselves as leaders in the field of labor and employment law for at least 20 years.

Mr. Tukel will be installed as a Fellow on November 6, 2010, in Chicago, Illinois, coincident with the American Bar Association’s Labor and Employment Law Section’s Continuing Legal Education Conference. As a Fellow of the College he will join Butzel Long attorneys William Saxton, John Hancock, Jr., Robert Boonin and James Rosenfeld.

The College was established through an initiative of the Council of the Section of Labor and Employment Law of The American Bar Association. To be elected an individual must demonstrate the highest professional qualifications and ethical standards, sustained, exceptionally high quality services to clients, bar, bench and public, and significant evidence of scholarship, teaching, lecturing and/or published writings on Labor and Employment Law.

Based in Butzel Long's Detroit office, Mr. Tukel is Chair of the firm’s Labor and Employment Law Department. His practice is devoted to representing both public and private employers in state and federal discrimination and wrongful discharge litigation, as well as traditional labor matters such as collective bargaining and union organizational drives.

He regularly counsels employers in all aspects of labor and employment law, in statutory compliance and in creating, implementing and administering employee handbooks and other personnel policies and practices. He has represented employers before state and federal trial and appellate courts, and various administrative agencies including: the National Labor Relations Board National Mediation Board Equal Employment Opportunity Commission Occupational Safety and Health Administration Michigan Department of Civil Rights Michigan Department of Labor Michigan Employment Relations Commission and Michigan Employment Security Commission.

Mr. Tukel has published a number of scholarly articles on various aspects of labor and employment law. He has lectured on a wide range of employment and labor issues, has served on the faculty of the Institute of Continuing Legal Education, and has served as a private arbitrator and private facilitator in employment matters.

He is listed in Chambers USA for Labor and Employment Law, in Best Lawyers in America for Labor and Employment Law, and is named a Michigan Super Lawyer, for employment litigation defense. Mr. Tukel is a member of the National Association of College and University Attorneys, the Michigan Council of School Attorneys, the American Bar Association (Labor and Employment, and Litigation sections), the State Bar of Michigan (Labor and Employment, and Litigation sections), the Detroit Bar Association, the Oakland County Bar Association, and is a Fellow of the State Bar of Michigan Foundation.

Mr. Tukel is an honors graduate of the University of Michigan Law School (J.D., cum laude, 1982), and also received his undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan (A.B. with high honors and high distinction, 1979).
