He focuses his practice in the areas of business and commercial litigation, including non-compete agreements and trade secret issues.

Overview

Pat Malone possesses comprehensive experience gained through his judicial clerkships and work in client-focused legal services. Prior to joining Butzel, he served as a law clerk to the Honorable Curt A. Benson, 17th Circuit Court, Kent County Specialized Business Docket, in Grand Rapids, where he drafted court opinions and orders, conducted in-depth legal research, and managed complex dockets to ensure efficient case resolution and the avoidance of potential conflicts. Prior to this clerkship, Pat honed his experience in civil litigation as a law clerk at a firm in California where he handled matters involving complex litigation with high-net-worth clients and creditors’ actions in bankruptcy. His responsibilities included drafting motions, contracts, and discovery requests while maintaining effective communication with supervising attorneys, clients, and opposing counsel.

During his time at Santa Clara University Law School, Pat gained firsthand experience in Business and Intellectual Property Law through the University’s Entrepreneur’s Law Clinic. He assisted clients in navigating copyright and trademark protections, advised on entity formation and operating agreements, and educated entrepreneurs on the legal implications of launching a startup. In addition, Pat was a member of Santa Clara University’s Law Review where he was an articles editor.
