Butzel Long elects shareholders

DETROIT, Mich. – Butzel Long attorneys Ron Cheli, Jennifer A. Dukarski, Damien DuMouchel, Deb Geroux, Ira Hoffman, Brett Miller and Andrew Stumpff have been elected shareholders.

Ron Cheli

Cheli is an attorney and Certified Public Accountant. His practice is focused on representing business entities and commercial transactions, with a substantial emphasis in tax matters. He provides specialized advice in the areas of: business organizations; mergers and acquisitions; loans and alternative financing; tax planning and controversies; and real estate transactions.

He earned a B.S.B.A. (with majors in both Accounting and Business Administration) from Aquinas College (1973) and a J.D. from Wayne State University with a concentration in taxation (1977).

Jennifer A. Dukarski

Dukarski focuses her practice at the intersection of technology and communications with an emphasis on emerging and disruptive issues:
digital media, cybersecurity, infotainment, vehicle safety and connected and autonomous cars.

In her practice, she has negotiated contracts for autonomous vehicle components, reviewed contracts involving wireless updates to in-vehicle technology, assisted companies in achieving successful Petitions for Inconsequential Noncompliance with NHTSA and has addressed multiple vehicle component recalls. She has become a national leader in legal issues facing emerging automotive technology and is the leader of Butzel Long’s connected car working group.

Dukarski is a graduate of the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law (J.D., magna cum laude, 2010). She’s also a graduate of the University of Detroit Mercy College of Engineering and Science, (B.S., Mechanical Engineering, summa cum laude, 1996).

Damien DuMouchel

DuMouchel concentrates his practice in the area of white collar criminal defense, corporate investigations, and professional discipline matters for lawyers and judges. He has represented individuals and corporations under investigation for, or charged with, antitrust violations, healthcare fraud, tax evasion, and obstruction of justice. He also assists clients with regard to grand jury investigations, subpoenas, and search warrants.

He also represents lawyers and judges facing professional discipline inquiries. This representation includes matters before the Michigan Attorney Grievance Commission.
DuMouchel is a graduate of the University of Miami School of Law (J.D., 2010) and Boston College (B.A., 2004), where he earned a double major in psychology and sociology.

Debra A. Geroux

Geroux’s healthcare practice focuses health care compliance, data privacy and security, and fraud and abuse litigation (both criminal and civil). In November 2012, she earned her Certified in Healthcare Compliance (CHC) designation from the Compliance Certification Board. She has represented individuals and corporations under investigation for, or charged with, healthcare fraud, as well as the collateral consequences related to such actions. She also has counseled healthcare providers of all sizes on general compliance and HIPAA privacy compliance, including the creation of and training related to required policies and procedures, and assisted entities with investigation of suspected breaches of healthcare data and corresponding breach reporting.

In addition to her healthcare practice, Geroux has extensive experience in general commercial civil litigation and appeals.

Geroux is a graduate of Michigan State University College of Law (J.D., cum laude, 1995), where she was a member and managing editor of the Law Review. She received her Bachelor of Science from Michigan State University in 1988.

Ira E. Hoffman

Hoffman focuses his practice on government contracts, international law, commercial litigation and cybersecurity issues.

Hoffman’s government contracts practice includes conducting bid protests, size protests, and claims, and advising clients on a wide range of other issues, including teaming agreements, subcontracting, intellectual property rights, M&A, cost allowability, ethics and compliance, audits and investigations, the False Claims Act, suspension and debarment, security clearances, and small business issues. His international practice covers export controls (ITAR and EAR), and OFAC sanctions programs, plus import issues such as anti-dumping and countervailing duty (AD/CVD) and Section 337 investigations, and rule-of-origin and HTS classifications. And his cybersecurity practice addresses strategies for clients’ mitigation of liability for inevitable cyber breaches.

Hoffman earned a J.D., cum laude, from the University of Miami School of Law in 1983, where he also served on the Law Review. Moreover, he earned an M.Sc (Econ) at the London School of Economics in 1975, where he also taught. Hoffman earned a B.A. from the University of Michigan in 1973.

Brett Miller

Miller focuses his practice on labor and employment-law and fair-housing litigation. In addition to representing clients in federal and state court venues, Miller has appeared before the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the Michigan Department of Civil Rights. Moreover, he has represented clients in labor arbitrations.

Miller is AV® Peer Review Rated by LexisNexis/Martindale-Hubbell. He was named a Rising Star in 2009, 2010, 2013-2016 by Super Lawyers. He was also awarded Michigan Lawyers Weekly, “Up & Coming Lawyers Award” in 2015.

He earned his J.D., cum laude, from the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law, where he was a member of the Law Review and Moot Court Board of Directors and received his undergraduate degree from James Madison University, cum laude, with distinction.

Andrew Stumpff

Stumpff is a long-time employee benefits and executive compensation lawyer. He is a Fellow of the American College of Employee Benefits Counsel and has been named a key individual in Michigan employee benefits/compensation law by Chambers USA.

He is a former co-chair of the Employee Benefits Committee of the New York State Bar Association Tax Section. He teaches Employee Benefits and Executive Compensation at the University of Michigan Law School and at the University of Alabama Law School LL.M in the Taxation program.

Stumpff received an A.B. in Mathematics from Washington University in 1983 and a J.D. in 1986 from the University of Michigan Law School, where he served as Article Editor of the Michigan Law Review.
