Butzel Long attorneys featured during Michigan Press Association convention in Grand Rapids

DETROIT, Mich. – Four Butzel Long attorneys will be featured speakers during the Michigan Press Association (MPA) convention January 29-30, 2010 in Grand Rapids. The attorneys include Robin Luce Herrmann, Robert A. Boonin, Omar N. Chaudhary and Christopher M. Taylor.

The topic for their presentation is: "The MPA Hotline 'Top Ten.'" The attorneys will provide an up-to-date recap of what's cooking on the MPA Hotline: how to enforce the right to information, the "best practices" in reader submissions, freelancers, stringers, and advertising, and how to deal with some of the more common employment law issues as members restructure their operations during difficult economic times. They will provide an overview of how employers should deal with some of the more common employment law issues they have to grapple with as they downsize, furlough or restructure their operations during difficult economic times.

Robin Luce Herrmann
Ms. Herrmann is the Acting General Counsel of the Michigan Press Association. Based in Butzel Long's Bloomfield Hills office, Ms. Herrmann concentrates her practice in the areas of media law, particularly defamation and access issues civil rights and commercial litigation, including RICO. She also has been a contributing author to the Supplements to Rights and Liabilities of Publishers, Broadcasters, and Reporters, (Shepard's/McGraw Hill), and has been active in the ABA's Media Law Committee. She also served on the board of the Michigan Freedom of Information Committee and serves on the Michigan Bar's Publication and Website Advisory Committee. Ms. Herrmann has been an adjunct professor at Oakland University teaching "The Law of The Press” and frequently speaks on media law issues.

Robert A. Boonin
Based in Butzel Long's Ann Arbor office, Mr. Boonin's practice is largely concentrated in the areas of labor, employment discrimination, public contract and education law. He has represented public and private sector clients across the country, in over thirty jurisdictions, in wrongful termination, employment discrimination, wage and hour, tenure proceedings and other employment-related lawsuits and claims, as well as in labor grievance arbitrations, labor negotiations, unfair labor practices and representational proceedings and labor strikes.

Mr. Boonin's public sector clients include universities, community colleges, K-12 school districts, charter schools, as well as cities and townships. He has negotiated well over one hundred collective bargaining agreements, and he has also successfully represented employers in over one hundred arbitration cases. He is also well versed in NLRB issues, having extensively practiced before that agency in many NLRB Regions.

Omar N. Chaudhary
Mr. Chaudhary, who is based in the firm’s Ann Arbor office, practices in the area of commercial litigation. He has handled a wide variety of cases, including disputes over contracts, intellectual property, labor and employment, and other matters. As a member of Butzel Long's Intellectual Property, Media and Technology Department, Mr. Chaudhary has handled defamation and intellectual property matters for newspapers, websites, television stations and others. Mr. Chaudhary also has handled matters related to the open government laws, such as federal and state Freedom of Information Act laws and the Open Meetings Act.

Christopher M. Taylor
Based in Butzel Long's Ann Arbor office, Mr. Taylor's experience in the areas of business, intellectual property, and entertainment law have included the drafting and negotiation of services, nondisclosure, talent, and supply agreements patent, trademark and copyright licensing mergers and acquisitions information technology and intellectual property management and compliance policies and the prosecution of trademark registration applications and management of trademark portfolios including the defense and prosecution of opposition and cancellation proceedings before the United States Trademark Trial and Appeal Board.
