Butzel Long attorneys Benjamin K. Steffans and Bernard J. Fuhs publish article in State Bar of Michigan's Litigation Newsletter

DETROIT, Mich. – Butzel Long attorneys Benjamin K. Steffans and Bernard J. Fuhs co-authored an article that was published in the summer edition of the State Bar of Michigan's The Litigation Newsletter. Titled, "The Evolution of Personal Jurisdiction through the Technological Advances of Our Time," the article focuses on how changing technologies have impacted the personal jurisdiction analysis.

Mr. Fuhs and Mr. Steffans are both uniquely qualified to write about technology issues because they both routinely confront them in their day-to-day practice. In his day-to-day practice, Mr. Fuhs often deals with trade secrets which are frequently stored on computers and frequently involve detailed forensic analyses. Mr. Steffans often is involved in protecting clients who experience breaches of sensitive information that could lead to identity theft. This information is usually stored on computers.

Mr. Steffans is based in Butzel Long’s Detroit office and, in addition to practicing in the area of security breaches, practices in the areas of labor and employment law and franchise law. He frequently writes in the labor and employment areas.

Mr. Steffans graduated from Boston College Law School where he was a member of the American Constitution Society and the Federalist Society. While in law school, he participated in numerous competitions, including the Negotiation Competition and Moot Court.

Mr. Steffans graduated from Michigan State University with Highest Honors, majoring in history and Latin. While at Michigan State, Mr. Steffans was appointed to the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, the Golden Key Honour Society, and was selected to be a member of Phi Beta Kappa.

Based in the firm's Detroit office, Mr. Fuhs concentrates his practice in the areas of business litigation and general corporate law. He has significant experience in the following areas: non-compete/non-disclosure/trade secret, franchise law and franchise litigation, business disputes, corporate and limited liability organization and operation, corporate transactions, and finance law. He also advises start-up and closely held businesses, as well as sports and fitness industry members.

Mr. Fuhs is a graduate of the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law (J.D., magna cum laude, 2006) and the University of Detroit Mercy (B.S., summa cum laude, 2003). He interned for Chief Justice Maura Corrigan of the Michigan Supreme Court. Mr. Fuhs also was a four year player on the Division 1 Men's Basketball team at UDM President of the 2nd Year Class at UDM School of Law on Law Review a member of the Justice Frank Murphy Honor Society and a member of Beta Gamma Sigma and Beta Alpha Psi.

Mr. Fuhs also enjoyed many honors as an undergraduate including the following: Captain of 2002/2003 UDM Division 1 Men's Basketball Team the Wall Street Journal Award - Top Student in the UDM College of Business Administration the Financial Executives International Award - most outstanding undergraduate student in Accounting and Finance the Beta Alpha Psi Award - highest scholastic average in undergraduate program member of the All Horizon League Athletic Academic Team – (2002/2003) the President's and Horizon League Honor Roll all four years and the William Ebben Award for athletic and academic excellence. He was on the Dean's list all years attended at UDM and UDM School of Law, and received the Cavanaugh scholarship at UDM School of Law.

Prior to joining Butzel Long, Mr. Fuhs was the President/Co-Owner of Fastdater, Inc. of Michigan. He also clerked with DaimlerChrysler Services in the Office of General Counsel as well as the Executive Office of DaimlerChrysler Services as a field operations analyst.

Mr. Fuhs is a member of the State Bar of Michigan, the American Bar Association (The Forum on Franchising) and the Livonia Chamber of Commerce. He also serves on the Board of Directors of the University of Detroit-Mercy Titan Club.
