BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich. –  Butzel Long attorney Dennis B. Schultz will be a featured speaker during a webinar hosted by Grant Thornton on Thursday, September 15, 2011.  The title of the program is: “Construction Owner’s Toolbox: Oversight of Contractor Changes and Claims.” Mr. Schultz will co-present the program with James T. Schmid, CPA, CFE, partner and national Construction Advisory practice leader, Grant Thornton LLP. 

Based in Butzel Long’s Bloomfield Hills office, Mr. Schultz is a former Manager of the firm’s Business Litigation Practice.  Prior to beginning his legal career, Mr. Schultz spent more than 10 years in construction contracting and the real estate development area.  Mr. Schultz is listed in The Best Lawyers in America, 2011. 

“During the webinar, we will provide a framework for how to best plan for changes and extra cost claims that frequently arise on construction projects,” said Mr. Schultz.  “We will offer practical tips for how to control and respond to contractor requested changes and claims for extra costs which can significantly impact the final cost of a construction project.”

Mr. Schultz has conducted numerous trials in federal and state courts and the American Arbitration Association.  He has been lead counsel in major business disputes, shareholder class actions, corporate hostile take-over actions, commercial contract disputes and trade secret/intellectual property cases.  He has deep experience in the construction and development industry, including acting as lead counsel in large complex engagements.

He has represented owners, general contractors, construction managers and subcontractors in negotiation and drafting contract documents and negotiated settlements of claims on a variety of construction projects, including design, product and system performance, contractor performance and numerous contract disputes.

Mr. Schultz has served as lead counsel in the litigation of claims on major construction projects, including both public and private projects such as office complexes, waste water treatment plants, industrial processing facilities, manufacturing facilities, automobile manufacturing plants, and major healthcare projects.  His experience includes numerous arbitrations of disputes and litigation in the state and federal courts of Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Illinois, Washington, D.C., and Colorado. 

Mr. Schultz is a graduate of Michigan State University College of Law (J.D., cum laude, 1977), where he was Editor-in-Chief, Law Review, 1977, and an honors graduate of Wayne State University (B.S., 1970).
