Belle Isle aquarium to get new weathervane designed by contest winner

10.7.2014

DETROIT, MI -- A weathervane conceived by a local artist will soon adorn the top of the Albert Kahn-designed Belle Isle Aquarium.

A design by Bruce Gerlach of Eastpointe was chosen among 25 entries in a competition held in August.

The winning weathervane, featuring a gar -- a fish native to the Great Lakes, and four electric eels, will be forged and placed atop the aquarium in a project funded by the Butzel Long law firm, which is celebrating its 160th anniversary as the aquarium marks its 110th.
