GENERAL PURPOSE:

Butzel is seeking a standout candidate with experience in or a passion for family law to join our growing team in Southwest Michigan.  Our firm has been in existence for over 170 years and has helped shape the legal and business landscape of Michigan’s largest cities.  Butzel continues to grow our client base and to be at the forefront of some of the biggest cases and most important issues in our industry.  We pride ourselves on fostering not only success for our clients, but a meaningful work environment for our team as well through our core values of Excellence, Drive, Trust, and Teamwork.  We are seeking a standout candidate who embodies these values and is looking to grow in their practice to join our team.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Represent clients in family law matters including divorce, custody, parenting time, and support proceedings.
  • Prepare for and represent clients in litigation proceedings, including trials, hearings, discovery, motion practice, etc.
  • Construct and review pleadings, motions, discovery requests, settlement agreements, and other legal documents.
  • Communicate with potential new clients, existing clients, opposing counsel, and court staff.
  • Take and defend depositions and interact with expert witnesses.
  • Collaborate with paralegals, legal assistants, and other attorneys within the Firm.
  • Maintain responsive communication with other Firm attorneys and clients regarding case developments.
  • Provide legal counsel and develop case strategies tailored to clients’ unique needs.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Excellent written and oral advocacy skills.
  • Ability to provide client service befitting Butzel standards of excellence and hospitality.
  • Oversee case files and manage deadlines efficiently using legal practice management systems.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND/OR TRAINING:

  • Must be a graduate of an accredited law school.
  • Must have at least 3 years of experience as a practicing attorney.
  • Admitted to practicing law in the state of Michigan or having the eligibility for admission.
  • Have experience within the practice area of family law and/or commercial litigation.
