Update! There’s Still Time to Review Michigan Property Tax Assessments; Additional Extended Deadlines for Property Tax Appeals due to New Legislation

6.12.2020

Governor Whitmer, on June 11, 2020, signed a Bill[1] amending the Tax Tribunal Act to extend to August 31, 2020, the deadline by which a petitioner must file for a property tax appeal. Our earlier Client Alert discussed Executive Order 2020-87, which extended from May 1 to July 31 the deadline for certain property tax appeals (including commercial real and personal property). The Bill signed into law by Governor Whitmer further extends the deadline for all property tax appeals, including both residential and commercial, until August 31, 2020.

Butzel Long’s tax appeal team represents clients that own industrial, commercial, and residential real property. Butzel Long also represents clients in appeals for personal property tax assessments, appeal of changes in the classification of real estate from industrial to commercial, and applications for (or denials of) property as exempt from tax. In addition to property tax, Butzel Long’s tax team also represents clients in federal, state, or city tax appeals related to income, franchise, sales, or use tax assessments.
