The KORUS FTA and the U.S. Automotive Sector: Cause for Optimism

Winston Churchill once said that the pessimist sees dif?culty in every opportunity and the optimist sees opportunity in every dif?culty. The optimists prevailed throughout the long, dif?cult negotiations that culminated in the Korea-U.S. Free Trade Agreement, known as the KORUS FTA.

Beginning in February 2006 and following eight formal rounds of negotiations and countless other meetings, the U.S. and Korea signed the KORUS FTA June 30, 2007. Dif?culties remained, however.
