Former United States Patent and Trademark Office attorney Michael Tomaszewski joins Butzel Long

BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich. – Michael Tomaszewski has joined Butzel Long as an associate attorney based in the firm's Bloomfield Hills office. He concentrates his practice in the area of intellectual property law.

Prior to joining Butzel Long, Mr. Tomaszewski received numerous awards, promotions and recognitions for his exceptional work performance at the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) as a patent examiner/attorney. With the USPTO for three years, Mr. Tomaszewski examined and classified patent applications pertaining to various technological disciplines including computer science, medical, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and biomedical engineering. He examined patent applications from a vast array of technological arts including medical devices, biotech, databases, surgery, electrical computers, optics, packaging, imaging, gaming and business methods. He negotiated and conducted interviews with various entities during prosecution of patent applications and he examined and processed trademark applications.

Prior to his work at the USPTO, Mr. Tomaszewski was a corporate and information technology strategy consultant at global management consulting and technology services companies. He consulted and devised corporate strategies for dozens of Fortune 100 and 500 companies including Microsoft, IBM, Merck, Sony, Motorola, Biogen, AT&T, TimeWarner, EA.com and Siebel. His consultations included intellectual property transactions (e.g., protection, licensing and development), mergers and acquisitions, out-sourcing, e-commerce/Internet, information technology, business development/start-ups, enterprise solutions, market development and website development. He negotiated and collaborated with client executives, venture capitalists, third-party vendors and others and drafted technical and business documents for a wide array of industries including computer, banking, auto, media and entertainment, manufacturing, securities, telecomm, pharmaceutical and medical.

Mr. Tomaszewski's experience also includes biotech research and development as a scientist and manager at the pharmaceutical company, Pfizer Inc. He managed production of several pharmaceutical production lines and lead process re-engineering projects focusing on supply chain, packaging, quality assurance testing. He collaborated with various entities including research scientists, corporate management, The Food and Drug Administration and the National Institute of Health.

He is a member of the State Bar of Michigan and is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Mr. Tomaszewski is a graduate of Michigan State University School of Law (J.D., 2004) where he received Concentration Honors from a top ranked intellectual property program was on the Dean's List received various academic achievement awards and, contributed to the Intellectual Property Journal. He is completing LL.M. intellectual property coursework at George Washington University Law School. He also received his undergraduate degree (B.S., Microbiology Genetics/Biotechnology) from Michigan State University and earned his M.B.A. from Oakland University (1998, magna cum laude, Finance & Information Technology Concentrations). Mr. Tomaszewski is a resident of Rochester Hills.
