Attorney also reappointed to two MHA Committees

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Butzel Long health industry attorney Susan Patton, has been invited to join the Michigan Health & Hospital Association's (MHA) Business Advisory Council.

The Michigan Health & Hospital Association (MHA) is the statewide leader representing all of the 144 community hospitals in Michigan. The MHA Business Advisory Council is comprised of both hospital executives and representatives from the business community. It is charged with identifying emerging health care issues and trends of mutual concern to both purchasers and providers. Among the business groups involved are the Small Business Association of Michigan, the Detroit Regional Chamber, the Grand Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce, and the Michigan Manufacturers Association. Ms. Patton has advised the group on issues relating to HIPAA/ HITECH and health care reform.

In addition, Ms. Patton was reappointed to two MHA Committees – the Patient Safety and Accountability Committee and the Small and Rural Hospital Committee.

Ms. Patton has 29 years of experience in the health industry, including 22 years of experience representing nonprofit, tax-exempt organizations, and serving as in-house counsel for the third largest Catholic health care system in the United States, where she represented numerous tax exempt subsidiaries in transactions and joint ventures with taxable for profit entities. Her nonprofit experience includes, the formation of non-profit stock, membership and directorship corporations the formation and qualification for tax-exempt status of nonprofit clients borrower's counsel in tax-exempt and taxable financings for multi-hospital and long-term care systems participation in one of the largest coordinated examination program (CEP) audits ever by the IRS client counseling regarding TBOR2 regulations, disqualified persons and intermediate sanctions, private use rules for tax-exempt bonds, and other matters.

Ms. Patton graduated from Wayne State University Law School (J.D., cum laude, 1979) where she was Articles Editor of the Wayne Law Review. In 1976, she earned her M.A. from Wayne State University (1976) and graduated from the University of Michigan (B.G.S., cum laude, 1973).

Ms. Patton is an active member of the State Bar of Michigan and is a current member and former Chair of the Health Care Law Section. She served as Editor of Newsletter Editor of Record Retention Manual and Consent Manual Collaborated with ICLE on first co-sponsored Health Care Law Institute and served as a Council Member. She also is a member of the State Bar of Michigan Business Law Section, and served on the Nonprofit Corporation Subcommittee. Her memberships also include the National Health Lawyers Association and the Michigan Society of Health Care Attorneys, where she formerly served on the Board of Directors. Ms. Patton has contributed guest articles to numerous publications.
