BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich. – Butzel Long attorney Richard A. Shapack was a featured speaker recently during the Colorado Bar Association's CLE Law Conference in Vail. Mr. Shapack has been a speaker at the Conference for the past 12 years and this was the third year that he has served as the moderator of the Tax Program. Mr. Shapack's presentation was entitled, "Saving the Family Cottage: Planning with LLCs."

Based in the firm's Bloomfield Hills office, Mr. Shapack's practice is concentrated in business law, real estate and estate planning with special emphasis on tax and business planning.

Mr. Shapack is a Fellow of the American College of Tax Counsel, a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (and a member of its Charitable Planning Committee) and has been certified (since 1983) by the Florida Bar as a Board Certified Tax Lawyer. In 2006, he was named in the first listing of Michigan Super Lawyers and was named again in 2007 and 2008.

Mr. Shapack has been a speaker at numerous ABA Real Property Section and Tax Section meetings, as well as State Bar of Michigan meetings, the Michigan Institute for Continuing Legal Education, the Tax Management Advisory Board, the BNA Law Education Institute National Law Conference and the NYU Real Estate Institute. Mr. Shapack also has authored many articles.

From 1998 to 2004, Mr. Shapack served on the Council for the State Bar of Michigan Probate and Estate Planning Section in 1999, he was made a member and continues to serve on the Advisory Board for BNA's Real Estate Reporter and from 2001 to 2004, he served on the Harvard Business School Alumni Association Board of Directors. Since 2004, he has been a member of the Professional Advisory Board for the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan and in 2005, he was elected to the Board of Directors of Michigan Heritage Bank.

On a personal level, Mr. Shapack spent eleven years on active duty in the Navy serving on nuclear submarines and at the Navy Strategic Systems Project Office. He is the President of the Harvard Business School Club of Michigan the Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees of Lighthouse of Oakland County General Counsel to, a past President and a past Treasurer of the Birmingham Rotary Club and a past President of the Metropolitan Detroit Council of the Navy League. He has been involved in numerous charitable activities including the Non-Profit Leadership Collaborative, Cornerstone Schools and Bar-Ilan University Board of Advisors.

Mr. Shapack is a graduate of the United States Naval Academy (B.S. - Engineering), Harvard University Graduate School of Business (M.B.A.) and Catholic University Columbus School of Law (J.D.).
