Butzel Long attorney Mark T. Nelson will be a featured speaker during ICLE’s 52nd Annual Probate & Estate Planning Institute

ANN ARBOR, Mich. –  Butzel Long attorney and shareholder Mark T. Nelson will be a featured speaker during The Institute of Continuing Legal Education (ICLE)’s 52nd Annual Probate & Estate Planning Institute May 17-19, 2012 in Acme and June 15-16, 2012 in Plymouth.  Mr. Nelson will co-present a program with Sanford Finkel, MD, of the University of Chicago School of Medicine.  The presentation will focus on the challenges and opportunities for lawyers and experts in the area of Testamentary Capacity and Undue Influence.

“The presentation will discuss common reasons why estate documents are contested and the challenges that attorneys face when drafting or amending estate documents for clients with diminished mental capacity,” said Mr. Nelson.  “With Dr. Sanford Finkel, the presentation will also explore the opportunities and challenges that medical experts face when testifying in will contests.”

Mr. Nelson is an experienced litigator specializing in trust and estate litigation.  He has successfully tried cases to juries and judges in probate courts throughout Michigan.  He has defended as well as challenged the validity of trust and estate documents, the mental capacity of the settler and/or testator and the accounts of fiduciaries.  His probate litigation experience also includes actions to remove and surcharge trustees and personal representatives for their malfeasance and breaches of fiduciary duty.

Mr. Nelson has served on the Firm’s Board of Directors and also is active in community organizations and has served on several boards: Holy Family (formerly Boysville of Michigan), the Livonia Hockey Association, the Michigan Cougars AAU Girls’ Basketball Club and Walnut Creek Country Club (President 2007).  He served as a law clerk to the Honorable James Harvey, United States District Judge for the Eastern District of Michigan, 1977-1979.  He is a member of the Litigation and Probate Sections of the American Bar Association and State Bar of Michigan.

Mr. Nelson is an honors graduate of Detroit College of Law (J.D. 1976) and The University of Michigan (B.A. 1973).
