Butzel Long attorney Les Glick interviewed on first labor rights petition filed under USMCA against U.S. auto plant in Mexico

5.20.2021

Les Glick, Co-chair of the Butzel Long International Trade and Customs Specialty Team, was selected as “interview of the week” by GlobalAutoIndustry.com to discuss the recent filing of a labor rights complaint with the U.S Labor Department by the AFL-CIO and others alleging a violation of the U.S Mexico Canada Agreement (USMCA) by an American owned auto plant based in Matamoros, Mexico. Les discussed the history of the USMCA labor provisions and the special Rapid Response Mechanism that allows complaints to be filed by US companies and unions that can result in loss of USMCA duty-free benefits by exporters in Mexico. Les discussed the procedures involved and how a successful complaint could lead to the suspension of USMCA duty-free benefits against the plant and company involved. Les indicated that these complaints could further exacerbate supply chain disruptions and critical shortages already affecting the auto industry.
