BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich. - Butzel Long attorney and shareholder Beth S. Gotthelf will be a featured speaker during The Institute of Continuing Legal Education (ICLE) seminar, "Environmental Issues for Business Lawyers" on May 20, 2009 in Plymouth, Mich.

Co-sponsored by the Business Law Section of the State Bar of Michigan, experts will give advice to help participants answer business clients’ questions about important environmental issues that affect them.

Ms. Gotthelf will co-present a program with Steve Manz, Marsh Global Environmental Practice, entitled "Dealing with Environmental Concerns in Business Transactions." It will focus on issues such as, preparing a business for sale addressing lenders’ concerns, conducting due diligence on the accounting end of environmental liability (e.g. have liabilities been properly reported in the past so as not to effect the value of the company after closing), conducting due diligence on the environmental compliance of the business, understanding any site contamination and potential liability mechanisms to limit all the above liabilities valuation of the business as a result of compliance and contamination addressing contamination and due care requirements, establishing escrows for remediation or due care requirements ( and who controls the escrow) steps to ensure current business is in compliance with environmental laws and addressing environmental concerns when mortgaging and refinancing.

Based in Butzel Long's Bloomfield Hills office, Ms. Gotthelf heads up the environmental, energy and land use practice. She represents and counsels a diverse mix of clients in numerous matters throughout the country. These matters include compliance and permitting alternative energy issue responding to an emergency siting new facilities state and federal civil and criminal enforcement compliance audits brownfields tax incentives (obtaining, selling, purchasing) remediation of contaminated sites Planned Unit Developments (PUDs) removal of underground storage tanks Superfund (state and federal) insurance claims administrative procedures solid and hazardous waste landfills composting occupational safety and health transportation and land use.

Ms. Gotthelf is general counsel to the Michigan Association of Metal Finishers, Chair of the Birmingham Brownfield Authority, and former general counsel to the Wayne County Brownfield Authority.

Ms. Gotthelf is a graduate of the University of Detroit (J.D., 1985) and Oakland University (B.S. Public Administration and Public Policy, 1980).
