The UAW's Organizing Campaign at Volkswagen's Chattanooga, Tennessee Plant

One of the UAW's goals is to organize the foreign-owned automotive OEMs and suppliers - German, Japanese, and Korean. The UAW predicted in 2011 that it would organize one of the foreign-owned OEMs in 2011, but failed to do so. Now it is attempting to organize the Volkswagen plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The labor union that represents Volkswagen's employees in Germany is helping the UAW. If the UAW succeeds in organizing Volkswagen's Tennessee plant, it would be a major accomplishment that could improve its ability to organize other foreign-owned automotive OEMs and suppliers. This Client Alert reviews the current UAW organizing campaign and the relevant labor law issues.
