Commerce Extends Deadlines in Section 232 Auto and Auto Parts Probe

6.21.2018

As a result of pressure from many sources including foreign embassies, the U.S Department of Commerce has announced an extension of the deadlines in its recently announced investigation under Section 232 of U.S automobiles (including SUV’s and light trucks) and auto parts imports and their potential impact on the national security.  See Client Alert of May 30, 2018 for more details.

This new investigation is just in its early stages. Original deadlines were set for written submissions and requests to testify that proved controversial and the Commerce Department will announce a revision in the Federal Register of June 21st.[FR Doc. 2018-13462 Filed: 6/19/2018 4:15 pm; Publication Date: 6/21/2018].

The new planned dates are:

DATES: The due date for filing comments, for requests to appear at the public hearing, and for submissions of a summary of expected testimony at the public hearing is June 29, 2018.

The due date is July 13, 2018, for rebuttal comments submitted in response to any comments filed on or before June 29, 2018.

The public hearings will be held on July 19 and 20, 2018.

The hearings will begin at 8:30 a.m. and conclude at 5:00 p.m. local time, each day.

Commerce indicated that despite two days of hearings, only a small number of those requesting to testify will be accepted. Slots are expected to go first to embassies and trade associations. We will be obtaining copies of comments filed on June 29th that affect our clients and helping them prepare rebuttal comments by the July 13, 2018 deadline.
