Article: Automation Alley's 2008 Technology Industry Report

1.13.2009

The 2008 Automation Alley Technology Industry Report examines Southeast Michigan's technology industry and offers evidence of future growth and advancement despite the current struggling economy. The report includes an overview of the Automation Alley region and a look at the six clusters defined within the technology industry:
- Advanced Automotive
- Advanced Manufacturing
- Chemical and Material
- Information Technology
- Life Sciences
- Other Technologies

The analysis clearly indicates that Automation Alley's technology industry extends beyond simply the advanced automotive cluster. While employment in the advanced automotive cluster has declined, jobs have been added in clusters such as advanced manufacturing and the life sciences. Although the advanced automotive sector remains the largest cluster in terms of employment in the region, even without the advanced automotive cluster, Automation Alley's technology industry is a much larger part of the economy than it is at state and national levels.
