Beth I. deBaptiste
Beth deBaptiste is a Shareholder practicing in Butzel Long’s Bloomfield Hills’ office.
Ms. deBaptiste is a graduate of the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law (J.D. 1996) and Albion College (B.A. 1993, magna cum laude). In addition to her Bachelor of Arts degree in English, Ms. deBaptiste received her public service concentration through the Gerald Ford Institute for Public Service by completing an internship at the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office in the Economic Crime Unit.
Ms. deBaptiste began her legal career as an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney at the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office, where she prosecuted criminal cases and tried jury and bench trials. In the fall of 1999, Ms. deBaptiste started private practice at a Mt. Clemens law firm where she defended a governmental body on a variety of litigation matters including claims of wrongful death, bodily injury, property damage, negligence, and trespass/nuisance.
In the spring of 2001, Ms. deBaptiste joined First American Title Insurance Company as Claims Counsel, and in September of 2001, joined the law firm of May, Simpson & Strote until September of 2014 when May, Simpson & Strote joined Butzel Long. Since 2001, Ms. deBaptiste’s practice has been concentrated in the areas of title insurance/real estate defense litigation, construction lien foreclosures, construction law and litigation, contract matters, mortgage foreclosures, deficiency actions, real estate law and civil business litigation, in addition to representing clients in residential real estate matters, including selling residential property, drafting and reviewing acquisition and closing documents and representing landlords and tenants in lease disputes in landlord-tenant court. Ms. deBaptiste has also argued several cases before the Michigan Court of Appeals, most notably in the case of New Freedom Mortgage v Globe Mortgage, et al, which established legal precedent in Michigan on the full credit bid rule.
Ms. deBaptiste is admitted to practice in Michigan state courts, the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, United States District Court for both the Eastern and Western Districts of Michigan as well as the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern and Western Districts of Michigan.
Ms. deBaptiste is also a member of the Real Property Law Section of the State Bar of Michigan, serving on the Construction Law Subcommittee, the Macomb County Bar Association, serving on the Real Estate Committee, the Oakland County Bar Association, the American Bar Association and the Women Lawyers Association of Michigan. Ms. deBaptiste is also a member of the Michigan Land Title Association, CREW (Commercial Real Estate for Women), BOMA Detroit (Building Owners and Managers Association), Women in Defense (Michigan Chapter), inForum, and is a member of Butzel Long’s Aerospace & Defense Industry Team and Women’s Leadership Committee.
