LOOK BEFORE YOU LEAP – THE LEGAL AND REGULATORY PITFALLS OF THE HEALTHCARE INDUSTRY:
While healthcare is a business, those looking to enter into the arena do not always appreciate the issues that come along with entrepreneurship. Unlike starting most new businesses, healthcare entities cannot simply open shop and start charging for their services. There are a number of complex risks and regulations to consider. This session will discuss the legal landscape for healthcare entrepreneurs, how best to comply with enhanced oversight, and the consequences of failing to do so.
- Overview of the Regulatory Landscape for healthcare.
- Compliance—From the IT department to the C-suite, compliance with the regulations and laws affecting healthcare businesses is a must. We will discuss cyber-security risks for healthcare business, and the IT department’s role, insurance considerations, and individual and enterprise liability under the DOJ’s “Yates Memo” Directive.
- Scared straight – Case examples of fines and administrative, criminal, and civil penalties.

TELEMEDICINE:
Telemedicine is a broad subject covering many aspects of health care delivery. The transmission of data from one practitioner to another can be considered telemedicine. The remote diagnosis of a patient likewise is telemedicine and the interaction between a patient and a physician over a video screen in real time is telemedicine. Although there are many applications of telemedicine, what is the future? How does reimbursement work? Are patients well served through the use of telemedicine? Where can telemedicine be used most effectively? Can telemedicine solve the physician shortage? These and other pressing issues will be addressed in this session.
