Butzel Long Shareholder Martin E. Karlinsky Named President of American Friends of Hebrew University of Jerusalem

New York, NY - Martin E. Karlinsky, shareholder in the New York office of national law firm Butzel Long, has been named President of the American Friends of The Hebrew University (AFHU). AFHU is a not-for-profit organization that supports The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel's foremost center of higher education and research and one of the world's leading universities.

"I am honored and humbled to be selected to lead the American Friends of The Hebrew University," said Mr. Karlinsky. "The Hebrew University is an institution that is integral to the State of Israel, and that stands as a beacon of human advancement as well as of peace between Israel and its neighbors. Forging a meaningful partnership between American Jewry and the people of Israel, AFHU helps to ensure the nation's well being by nurturing Israel's greatest asset: the intellectual strength of its people. AFHU's cultural and educational programs attract people from all walks of life, including Hebrew University and alumni, American scholars and scientists, and the general U.S. public. These programs, as well as , promote greater understanding of the University’s contributions in fields ranging from technology, medicine and law to agriculture, public policy and Jewish Studies.

Mr. Karlinsky has been a member of the Board of Directors of AFHU since 2006, as well as an associate governor of the Board of Governors of The Hebrew University itself. He was also president of the Greater New York Region of the AFHU from 2006 to 2008. He will become a governor of The Hebrew University in June 2009, as well as a recipient of an Honorary Fellowship from the university, awarded for service and leadership.

Mr. Karlinsky is a trial lawyer and litigator specializing in complex civil litigation, both business-related and private client. He is admitted to practice in New York State, California and the District of Columbia, before the Supreme Court of the United States, and before several United States District and Circuit Courts. He is a member of the American Bar Association (Section of Litigation) and the Federal Bar Council.

Mr. Karlinsky also holds leadership positions of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL). He is a member of the National Commission and the National Executive Committee of ADL, and serves as chair of its Litigation Oversight Committee. He was formerly chair of ADL's National Legal Affairs Committee, chair of ADL’s New York Regional Board, and vice chair of ADL’s National Civil Rights Committee. He also serves as a trustee of the ADL Foundation.
